≡ US, N. Korea Agree To Resume Search For War Remains: Pompeo
The United States and North Korea have agreed to resume field operations in the North to search for the remains of thousands of American soldiers killed in the Korean War.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement Sunday that officials from the two countries held productive and cooperative talks that resulted in firm commitments.
Their meeting at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom was the first general-level talks between the two countries since 2009.
Chief of Staff for the United Nations Command Major General Michael Minihan led the U.S. side, but it was not immediately clear who led talks for the North.
The two countries are scheduled to hold working-level meetings today to coordinate next steps, including the transfer of remains already collected in the North.■[2018.07.16]
≡ Parliament To Elect Heads Of Standing Committees
Parliament will hold a plenary session this afternoon to elect the heads of 16 standing committees for the second half of the 20th National Assembly.
Lawmakers will also pass a revision bill to parliamentary law that will allow the committee on education, culture, sports and tourism to be separated into two -- one in charge of education and the other the remaining affairs.
The heads of the two committees will be elected on July 26th.
Rival parties earlier agreed the ruling Democratic Party would chair eight committees, the main opposition Liberty Korea Party seven, the Bareunmirae Party two, while the joint bloc of the Party for Democracy and Peace and the Justice Party would head one.■[2018.07.16]
