SK hynix, South Korea's number two chipmaker, says it will buy U.S.-based Intel's NAND chip operation in a deal worth 10.3 trillion won, or roughly 9 billion dollars.

In a regulatory filing Tuesday, the company reported that it will acquire Intel's "entire NAND business division excluding the Optane division."

The deal includes Intel's solid state drive (SSD) business and its factory in Dalian, China.

SK hynix, the world No. 2 DRAM chipmaker, has lagged in the NAND memory chip category.

But this latest move is expected to bolster its position against South Korean semiconductor giant Samsung, to make SK hynix the second-largest NAND flash chip producer overall.
