South Korea's economy posted modest growth in the third quarter as exports showed signs of improvement.
The Bank of Korea said Tuesday the nation's real gross domestic product grew 1.9 percent in the July-September period from the previous quarter, when it shrank 3.2 percent.
It marked the first quarterly expansion since the start of coronavirus pandemic and the fastest expansion since the first quarter of 2010.
However, the BOK said compared with a year ago, Asia's fourth largest economy contracted 1.3 percent.
According to third quarter data, exports grew by 15.6 percent on the back of increased shipments of automobiles and semiconductors.
Although the pandemic-caused trade slump eased as advanced nations lifted lockdown measures, domestic spending was still weak because of a resurgence of COVID-19 in mid-August.
The government has so far expanded its budget spending by at least 67 trillion won with four supplementary budgets to boost the virus-hit economy.
