A new suspected case of highly pathogenic avian influenza is being investigated in South Jeolla Province.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs said officials are investigating the suspected bird flu case, the first in 10 days, at a duck farm in Jangheung.

Since last November, South Korea has reported 106 cases of the H5N8 bird flu strain at local poultry farms, and 229 cases from wild birds.

Authorities have culled more than 29 million poultry to prevent the spread of the animal disease.

The move led to a sharp increase in the consumer price of poultry goods here, with the price of eggs jumping 43 percent on-year over the past week.

The price of chicken also increased but at a narrower margin of almost 8 percent.
