Police have raided the headquarters and regional offices of Namyang Dairy Products over the company's alleged claims that its yogurt drink helps prevent COVID-19.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said it conducted the raid Friday morning after the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety filed a complaint against Namyang for violating the Food Labeling and Advertisement Law.
A senior researcher at the company announced at a symposium on April 13 that "Bulgaris," one of their popular drinks, has an antiviral effect against the novel coronavirus.
But there was no official proof that supported the claim.
Police plan to question company officials once they analyze all the items and documents that were seized.
Authorities have vowed to sternly deal with misinformation and actions that obstruct the country's fight against COVID-19.
