The government will start providing emergency relief funds next week to the bottom 88 percent of earners in South Korea in its latest move to help the working class cope with the fallout from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Starting from September 6, eligible individuals will receive up to 250,000 won each, according to the interior and finance ministries.
The money must be spent by the end of December at traditional markets, neighborhood supermarkets, restaurants and other designated offline stores.
It cannot be used on delivery apps, at department stores, large discount stores and entertainment establishments.
The government earlier said it would dole out the relief funds before the Chuseok holiday that falls on September 20-22, in a move that also aims to spur holiday spending.
