The Korea Fair Trade Commission is fining the local branches of Audi Volkswagen and Stellantis a combined 1.06 billion won (US$913,400) for falsely advertising information about the gas emissions of their vehicles.
Both are alleged to have stated and marketed falsified facts about emissions from their diesel cars for domestic sales.
According to the antitrust regulator, a gas emission reduction device installed in their cars has been intentionally not in full operation under normal driving situations.
As a result, they fail to meet permissible emission levels.
Audi Volkswagen Korea is facing a fine of 831 million won and Stellantis Korea 231 million won.
The KFTC said it also ordered both automakers and their three parent groups to take corrective actions.
This is not the first time AVK has been slapped with penalties in South Korea for advertising false emissions.
In 2016, the company was banned from selling Volkswagen models in the country following a global diesel emissions cheating scandal involving Volkswagen Group.
