South Korea has decided to raise the minimum wage for foreign crew members on local fishing boats to the level received by their Korean colleagues by 2026.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced the decision Wednesday saying the government will continue efforts "to better protect the rights of foreign crews, as we've been increasingly dependent on international workers."
Currently, foreign crews receive 9,157 won per hour, some 81 percent of what their Korean counterparts take home.
The government implemented a set of guidelines to better improve working conditions of foreign fishermen, such as providing a standardized contract and ensuring enough break time.
Foreigners account for around one-fourth of the country's total workforce in the fishing industry.
