The majority leader of the U.S. Senate, Mitch McConnell, has said the impeachment trial for President Donald Trump will likely begin next Tuesday.

He told reporters in Washington that key players in the process would be sworn in the next few days.

He added both Democrats and Republicans would like to call witnesses.

The BBC's Ben Wright has more.

"There does seem to have been some breakthrough in back channel discussions between Democrats in the House and Republicans in the Senate led of course by Mitch McConnell. Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, had been insisting for four weeks, since the House voted to impeach President Trump, that there needed to be the ability to call in new witnesses, to call on new documents. That was resisted very much by Mitch McConnell, but he seems to have moved a bit now and has said that if both sides want to call witnesses then that's something that might be able to happen. That seems to have unlocked something and now the Democrats in the House have said right, it is time to get this forward, break the deadlock, begin the trial in the Senate."■
