USS Theodore Roosevelt nuclear-powered aircraft carrier
Thousands of U.S. sailors from a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier docked in Guam are being allowed to get off the warship after its captain said an outbreak of the coronavirus was threatening the lives of the crew.
According to the U.S. Navy, the USS Theodore Roosevelt has reported at least 93 COVID-19 cases among its 4,800-strong crew.
The Pentagon said Wednesday they were rapidly arranging hotel rooms on the Pacific island for many of the personnel.
A skeleton team will remain on the carrier to keep it operational
Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero said military officials had assured her all sailors who set foot on the island would have tested negative for the virus.
She acknowledged some locals were concerned about allowing the sailors into
Guam but said there was a "moral obligation" to help those in need.
The U.S. territory has 77 confirmed COVID-19 cases and three deaths.■
