Americans came together in Minneapolis Thursday to mourn the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who was killed in police custody more than a week ago.

The service, the first in a series of memorials set for three cities over six days, was attended by Hollywood celebrities, musicians and political leaders.

Attendees stood in silence for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, the amount of time Floyd was alleged to have been pinned to the ground by former police officer, Derek Chauvin.

In a fiery eulogy, civil rights leader, Reverend Al Sharpton, said "It's time for us to stand up in George's name and say, 'Get your knee off our necks!'".

Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder while three other former officers have been charged with aiding and abetting.

They could get up to 40 years in prison.

Floyd’s casket was scheduled to be sent to Raeford, North Carolina, near where he was born, for a public viewing and private family service on Saturday.

A public viewing will be held Monday in Houston, where he was raised and lived most of his life.
