India reported on Sunday its biggest daily spike in new coronavirus infections since its first case was detected in late January.

The country's health ministry confirmed nearly 25,000 cases and 613 deaths over the last 24 hours.

The surge pushed India's total tally to more than 673,000 cases and over 19,260 fatalities, pulling it closer to surpassing Russia, the world's third-most infected nation, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Authorities in northern Agra city said the historic Taj Mahal would remain closed to visitors even though the central government said it had permission to reopen on Monday.

India's top tourist attraction has been closed since mid-March due to the virus pandemic.
