The United States has topped three million confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.
According to an ongoing tally by Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. remains the worst affected country in the world in terms of infections.
It has also recorded over 131,000 deaths.
Addressing the grim milestone Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence said there are indications the worst-hit zones were reaching a turning point, citing the percentage of positive tests starting to flatten and emergency room statistics falling.
Earlier, he said more than 39 million Americans have already been tested.
Despite rising infections, President Donald Trump has called for students nationwide to return to their schools in the fall.
Prestigious universities Harvard and MIT meanwhile, sued the Trump administration after it threatened to revoke the visas of international students whose entire courses have moved online because of the pandemic.
