India's coronavirus caseload has surpassed 1.6 million.

The country's health ministry reported on Friday over 55,070 new cases in the past 24 hours.

It also confirmed 779 fatalities, pushing the death toll to 35,747.

The harrowing figures came as the government has decided to lift a nighttime curfew this weekend that has been in force since late March.

But subways, cinemas, swimming pools, entertainment parks, bars, theaters and other social gathering places will remain closed until August 31.

India has the third-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world after the United States with nearly 4.5 million cases and Brazil with over 2.6 million.
