World Bank headquarters
The World Bank has asked its board of directors to approve 12 billion dollars to help poor countries eventually purchase and distribute vaccines for the coronavirus.
If approved, the extra money would be aimed at low-and-middle-income countries.
World Bank President David Malpass told the French newspaper Le Figaro Tuesday that "the process of distributing a vaccine is complex" and it was important to anticipate the needs associated with it.
He said he wants the poorest countries to have access to a vaccine.
The bank already rolled out a record 45 billion dollars in financial support to 111 countries between April and June.
