Spain has become the first country in Western Europe to surpass 1 million confirmed coronavirus infections.

The grim milestone was reached Wednesday after the health ministry reported nearly 17,000 additional cases of COVID-19 in the previous 24 hours.

The country has also recorded more than 34,300 deaths.

Health Minister Salvador Illa and regional heads of health will meet on Thursday to discuss their virus strategies.

They may consider employing curfews to target late-night parties, which have been a source of contagion.

Illa earlier warned, "Some very hard weeks are coming."

The Spanish government declared a state of emergency in Madrid and eight surrounding areas on October 9, imposing partial lockdowns to try and get the virus situation under control amid pushback from regional governments.

The measure is due to expire on Saturday.
