The World Health Organization says the risk of the coronavirus spreading on flights appears to be "very low" but cannot be ruled out.
The WHO, in a statement to Reuters Thursday, stressed that sick passengers and people with confirmed exposure to the new coronavirus still should not be permitted to travel.
The agency also noted that it was aware of at least two cases of in-flight transmission on flights from London to Hanoi and Singapore to China.
The remarks echo comments made by the U.S. Defense Department last week.
According to the Defense Department, "a person would have to be sitting next to an infectious passenger for at least 54 hours to receive a dangerous dose of the virus through the air," indicating the unlikeliness of catching COVID-19 on a plane.
