The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved on Thursday remdesivir as the first drug to treat COVID-19.
The experimental drug, which California-based Gilead Sciences is calling Veklury, is said to cut the time to recovery by five days, from 15 days to 10 on average, based on the results of a large study led by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
It had been authorized for use on an emergency basis since the spring.
President Donald Trump received the antiviral, which is given via intravenous infusion, when he was hospitalized with the disease earlier this month.
It has also been used on coronavirus patients in South Korea.
