U.S. First Lady Melania Trump bid farewell on Monday, calling the past four years "unforgettable."

In a formal video message posted on Twitter, Trump said, "It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as First Lady of the United States."

She paid tribute to military families, COVID-19 pandemic health workers and those helping victims of opioid abuse.

"Be passionate in everything you do. But always remember that violence is never the answer, and will never be justified," the first lady said, without mentioning the recent deadly Capitol riot.

The comments came as President Donald Trump has largely been out of the public eye since his historic second impeachment last week, following the siege of Congress by his supporters.

The Trumps plan to leave the White House Wednesday morning for their home in Florida and will not attend Joe Biden's inauguration scheduled for midday.

Trump will be the first U.S. president in modern history to skip the swearing-in of his successor.

The outgoing president and his wife have also not invited Biden and his wife Jill for the traditional tea visit in the Oval Office.
