European leaders have decided to introduce tighter travel restrictions for the bloc's internal borders to limit the spread of new COVID-19 variants.

During a news briefing in Brussels on Thursday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU proposed "dark red" coronavirus zones with tougher rules.

"Persons traveling from dark red areas could be required to do a test before departure, as well as to undergo quarantine after arrival. This is within the European Union. And in view of the very serious health situation, all non-essential travel should be strongly discouraged."
