Japan has called on Myanmar to release a Japanese journalist who was recently detained by security forces.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said in a briefing Monday that Tokyo is demanding an explanation for the arrest of the unnamed journalist in Yangon the previous day.
The official did not identify the detainee but Japanese media identified him as Yuki Kitazumi, a freelance reporter.
Kato said the government will do all it can to protect its nationals in Myanmar.
There has been growing violence against civilians in the country protesting the military coup since February.
