The United States is among several countries to announce ambitious targets to tackle global warming at a landmark summit of world leaders.

President Joe Biden promised to halve emissions by 2030.

The BBC's Roger Harrabin reports.

President Biden is performing a balancing act.

His emissions target must be tough enough to satisfy scientists but practical enough to pass the U.S. Congress.

He's concluded the trick is framing climate change in the context of jobs, millions of them, he said, building a new electricity grid, making electric cars.

A few more new pledges followed.

The USA pushed Japan to upping its target cut from 26 percent to 46 percent.

South Korea said it would stop funding coal-fired power stations in developing countries.

That's an important move.

China's President Xi Jinping said his nation, the world's major current polluter, would peak its use of coal earlier than planned.
