The United States has thrown its support behind an initiative at the World Trade Organization to waive intellectual property protections for coronavirus vaccines.
The move is opposed by some countries and the pharmaceutical sector.

The U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said that extraordinary times called for extraordinary measures.
She said the U.S. would support waiving the intellectual property rights on COVID-19 vaccines.
The World Health Organization called it a monumental moment in the fight against the virus.
A group of about 60 countries, led by South Africa and India, had tried for the last six months to get the patents on vaccines set aside.
But it met with tougher positions from the Trump administration, the U.K. and the EU.
