Countries around the world have called for an end to the escalating violence between Israel and the Palestinians.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said the significant upsurge needed to stop immediately.

Palestinian officials say 20 people, including nine children, were killed when Israel carried out airstrikes in the Gaza Strip.

The BBC's Yolande Nell reports from Jerusalem.

This has been a very tense month of Ramadan and it started with Israeli police blocking off one of the entrances to the old city where Palestinians like to go in the evening.

Then there's been nightly clashes in this east Jerusalem neighborhood where Palestinian families have been facing evictions to make way for Jewish settlers.

Israel did take some steps like delaying a key court hearing in their case to try to lower the tensions.

But it really appears that it was too late.

The U.S. Secretary of State has now called on all sides to de-escalate this very dangerous situation.

We're getting a very similar message from the U.K. and others as well.
