The Israeli military has intensified its bombardment of Gaza as Palestinian militants continue to fire rockets at Israel.
An army statesman said aircraft and ground forces were engaged in operations against targets in the enclave.
The BBC's Jeremy Bowen reports from Jerusalem.

Israel' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a tweet that Israel would charge a very high price from Hamas.
The operation in Gaza, he said, would continue for as long as necessary.
Video on social media emerging from the area included large flashes, explosions, and gunfire.
Earlier in the evening, hundreds of Palestinians left the northern Gaza Strip because they said Israel was shelling their houses.
They grabbed their children, abandoned their possessions, and fled.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Israel and Gaza.
He said too many innocent civilians had already died.
A U.N. Security Council meeting to discuss the crisis has been delayed until Sunday at the request of the United States, which said it wanted to give more time for diplomacy to work.
