Authorities in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, once the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, said their entire population of around 11 million people will be tested for COVID-19.

The announcement comes a day after the city reported seven cases of the highly contagious Delta variant.

The BBC's Stephen McDonell reports from Beijing.

On the one hand, people in Wuhan have been told not to panic.

But on the other, officials have recommended that they don't leave the province.

All 11 million residents living in the world's first city to experience a coronavirus lockdown will be tested for the virus after a new outbreak of the Delta variant reached Hubei.

In Nanjing, where this latest outbreak started, millions of residents have already been tested three times within a matter of weeks.

Some highways have been closed and rail connections suspended as the authorities here attempt to rein in the virus which has been found in dozens of locations.
