The United States is taking the first steps toward requiring nearly all foreign visitors to be vaccinated for the coronavirus.

President Joe Biden's administration plans to take a phased approach to easing restrictions as it wants to reopen to visitors from abroad, a White House official said Wednesday.

No timeline has yet been determined.

Interagency working groups will study how and when to safely move toward resuming normal travel, but eventually all foreign citizens entering the country, with some limited exceptions, are expected to need to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter the U.S., according to the official.

The Biden administration has kept in place pandemic travel restrictions due to the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus, which has spurred the latest resurgence of infections across the nation.

But it has faced pressure to ease some rules from affected allies, the air travel industry and families who have been kept separated from loved ones.
