Chief nuclear envoy Lee Do-hoon speaks to reporters after holding talks with his U.S. counterpart Stephen Biegun in Washington
Seoul's chief nuclear envoy says South Korea and the U.S. have agreed to continue close consultations on possible inter-Korean projects.
Lee Do-hoon, special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, made the remark to reporters Thursday after holding talks with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun in Washington.
The officials met after President Moon Jae-in expressed a desire to resume inter-Korean cooperation projects in a bid to revive stalled nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang.
He also noted that he explained Seoul's commitment to work with Washington, adding that the U.S. has always showed respect for the decisions South Korea makes as a sovereign nation.
Asked if they discussed the issue of tours to North Korea, Lee declined to give details.
He said although individual tours are not subject to sanctions, they could raise "minor issues," so they would need to consult experts and monitor the issue to ensure there are no misunderstandings.■
