South Korean survivors from Annapurna avalanche return home
Surviving members of the South Korean group that was caught in an avalanche in the Himalayas in Nepal last week have returned home.
The six teachers from the South Chungcheong Province Office of Education arrived at Incheon International Airport today around 5 a.m.
Speaking to reporters, one of the teachers shared parts of their ordeal, explaining that during their trek they decided they could not reach the Annapurna Base Camp because of heavy snowfall.
They were descending in two separate teams last Friday when the avalanche suddenly hit.
The teacher said that at the time of the accident, the distance between the team in the lead and the team in the rear was around six meters.
Four members of the South Korean trekking group remain missing, along with three Nepali guides.
The search for them continues.
Experts have warned that the chance of survival is very low for those buried in an avalanche for more than two hours.■
