Suspected COVID-19 patients at the health center in southern Daegu
South Korea has reported 229 new cases of the new coronavirus on Saturday, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 433.
The figure represents the largest spike in a single day since the outbreak began in the country in late January.
According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of the 229 new cases, 95 are related to Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo, while 62 new cases are tied to the minor Christian sect known as Shincheonji in Daegu.
So far, a total of 114 virus cases have been reported from Daenam Hospital where the entire hospital has shut down to prevent further spread of the virus.
The health authorities said 231 virus patients have been traced to the Shincheonji church's services in Daegu.
The KCDC said it has placed a total of 9,336 Shincheonji members in self-quarantine.
Among them, 544 people suspected of having contracted the virus are being tested for the virus.■
