A teacher practices online classes
South Korea is expected to announce either on Monday or Tuesday whether schools will reopen on April 6.
Kindergartens, elementary, middle and high schools nationwide as well as child care centers have been shut down as part of precautionary measures to contain the novel coronavirus.
Lee Sang-soo, a senior official at the education ministry, told reporters that if the start of school is postponed further, classes could be held remotely, implying the government may provide online classes.
To gauge opinions on the April 6 timeline, the education ministry has been collecting feedback from parents while the interior ministry is in talks with local communities.
Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun is scheduled to meet with school superintendents on Saturday to discuss the matter.■
