The government says health insurance premiums will be used as a standard in deciding who will receive emergency disaster relief funds, aimed at minimizing economic hardships brought on by COVID-19.

This comes amid debates over the calculation method for doling out money from the government's stimulus program.

South Korea plans to offer 1 million won to four-person households in the bottom 70 percent income bracket as part of a one-off direct payment, widely viewed as basic income.

The government said on Friday that under its criteria, a four-person household can receive the emergency funds in cases where the March premiums paid by salary workers were below 237,000 won.

It's estimated that about 14 million households or 35 million people will be granted the rare aid worth a total 9.1 trillion won.■
