The government says it remains on alert for a possible second wave of COVID-19 infections, despite the single-day rise hovering around 50 for three consecutive days.

Kim Gang-lip, deputy head of the Central Disaster Management Headquarters, said during a regular briefing that if this trend of a slow rise in infections continues, patients in serious condition will be able to receive a stable treatment.

Kim then reiterated the importance of staying vigilant against the risk of further transmission of the disease, citing the relatively high mortality rate of COVID-19 among the elderly which is over 20 percent.

He then emphasized the need for the public's continued participation in social distancing since COVID-19 has the "destructive power" to rapidly spread when the population is at ease.■
