South Korea's foreign ministry has expressed regret over Japan's decision to extend its entry restrictions for South Korean visitors over the new coronavirus.

Tokyo notified Seoul on Monday of its decision to extend the restrictions, including the suspension of a visa-waiver program and a 14-day quarantine for arrivals from the country, until end of June.

An official at the foreign ministry said, "It is regrettable that Japan has continued to maintain entry restrictions against South Korea, where coronavirus infections have been stabilized."

The restrictions were imposed in March, when South Korea was dealing with a surge in virus cases, and in response, the government in Seoul suspended a visa-waiver program for Japan.

Japan's latest move comes after it ended its nationwide state of emergency for all prefectures amid a slowdown in new coronavirus cases.
