President Moon Jae-in speaks during an emergency government meeting to review the damage caused by heavy rains in the central and southern regions on August 11, 2020.
President Moon Jae-in has called on government ministries and agencies to mobilize all available resources for recovery efforts underway in regions hit hard by recent heavy downpours.
In a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Moon also instructed civil servants to maintain their emergency duty system until the end of the monsoon season, which is expected to last until mid-August.
Aside from considerable damage caused by flooding and landslides, the rain has killed or left missing a total of 42 people and displaced more than 7,500 others.
Moon cited warnings about the possibility of further damage as vast areas of land have become oversaturated, and called for continued vigilance.
