Ground Operations Command chief General Nam Yeong-shin has been tapped as the new Army chief of staff.
The defense ministry made the announcement Monday saying it is the first time a general hailing from the Reserve Officers' Training Corps has risen to the Army's top post.
Nam will succeed Suh Wook, who was appointed last week as South Korea's new defense minister.
Lieutenant General Lee Seong-yong from the Joint Chiefs of Staff was also named to lead the Air Force in the latest reshuffle.
He will replace Won In-chul, who was confirmed by parliament to be the next JCS chairman.
Army Vice Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Kim Seung-kyum was also appointed the new Combined Forces Command deputy commander, while Lieutenant General Ahn Joon-seok and Lieutenant General Kim Jeong-su were named the new heads of the Ground Operations Command commander and Second Operations Command, respectively.
