The health ministry says new social distancing guidelines will be announced on Saturday and take effect next week.

Ministry spokesman Son Young-rae said in a press briefing Tuesday that in-depth discussions on changes to antivirus curbs are underway between the central and local governments and health professionals on the best way forward.

Son said businesses that have been forced to close under current restrictions such as gyms and indoor sports facilities will gradually be allowed to reopen, without providing further details about the timeline.

The official explained that it has only been a week since the country has seen a slowdown in the daily number of new infections.

He also stressed that officials are waiting to see how the outbreak situation develops before completely easing antivirus rules.

The latest update comes as Level 2.5 social distancing in the capital region and Level 2 measures in other areas are set to expire on Sunday.
