South Korea has reported 346 new COVID-19 cases, including 314 domestically transmitted infections and 17 imported from abroad.

Health authorities also confirmed 12 more virus-related fatalities in the last 24 hours.

Friday's caseload was sharply down from 401 the previous day, but officials continued to warn against complacency amid efforts to contain a winter wave.

The government is aiming to slow the spread of infections ahead of next month's Lunar New Year holiday and an expected COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

Tougher social distancing measures, including a ban on gatherings of five or more people and restrictions on business operations after 9 p.m., have been extended until January 31.

The country has recorded 74,262 cases of COVID-19, including 1,328 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
