The South Korean military says it will invest 5 billion won into upgrading surveillance systems at frontline units along the east coast after a major security lapse last year.
In November, a North Korean man was captured after crossing the eastern border in Goseong, Gangwon Province, undetected.
At the time, the defense ministry blamed a loose screw for a malfunction in security sensors that failed to go off.
A military official on Tuesday said under the latest plan, more sensors and close-range cameras will be installed at bases while maintenance is carried out on existing systems.
The official added that the work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
