South Korea has reported 559 new cases of COVID-19, its highest daily increase in 10 days, reflecting a concerning rise in cluster infections that have recently emerged from a number of religious educational facilities.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on Wednesday confirmed 516 locally transmitted infections from the last 24 hours, and 43 imported from abroad, raising the total caseload to 76,429

Seven more people were killed by the virus, pushing the death toll to 1,378.

The number of patients with serious symptoms across the country reached 270, while the overall recovery figure reached 65,478.

According to officials, the government plans to share COVID-19 information with health experts and civic groups later in the day and discuss ways to contain the spread of the virus.

The authorities are expected to announce a new social distancing level for the country by the end of the week, ahead of the major Lunar New Year holiday in February.
