The government and ruling Democratic Party have decided to expand child care services for health care and quarantine workers who are on the frontlines of South Korea's fight against COVID-19.
DP Chairman Lee Nak-yon spoke about the plan on Tuesday, noting how these essential workers spend long hours away from home, adding that taking care of children is the most difficult part of their lives.
He said it was time to face the problem squarely by expanding related manpower.
But Lee emphasized officials must come up with an extra budget to provide the services.
The government earlier proposed supporting 60 to 90 percent of costs associated with child care for medical workers with kids aged 12 and under starting next month.
