The leaders of the ruling Democratic Party stepped down en masse Thursday to take responsibility for their crushing defeat in the April 7 by-elections.
They include Representative Kim Tae-nyeon, who served as acting chief and floor leader.
An election for a new floor leader will be held next Friday, with a national convention to elect a new head scheduled for May 2.
The party will be run under an emergency system until the convention.
The DP fell to the main opposition People Power Party after losing two key mayoral seats in Seoul and Busan as well as being defeated in 13 of the 19 other regional and local government races.
