Acting Prime Minister Hong Nam-ki has again called on the public to continue to actively follow coronavirus and quarantine measures, saying it is the only way to bring outbreaks under control.
Hong noted Friday during an interagency COVID response meeting that the daily number of new infections has dropped below 600 from 700 a month earlier.
He said the government will pour all of its resources into pulling that number below 500 in the days and weeks to come.
Hong also sought to reassure people that authorities were doing all they can to prevent the spread of variants, including dispatching officials to Ulsan in the country's southeast and setting up more temporary testing centers there to help contain new clusters.
The port city has reported more than 300 cases of the more contagious variant that was first detected in the United Kingdom, according to the KDCA.
