A biennial defense exercise involving the South Korean military, police, and firefighters will kick off Monday.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the Hwarang training will begin in the southeastern city of Daegu and the surrounding North Gyeongsang Province.
The joint drill is scheduled to run through November in five different regions.
A JCS official said their aim is to achieve "proficiency in the wartime and peacetime operational plan execution procedures and establish an integrated defense posture."
This year's will include training on how to respond to nontraditional security threats like COVID-19 as well as operations to prepare against infiltration and attacks on important national facilities.
The JCS said only essential personnel will take part to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
