New Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum says he will prioritize the implementation of stricter anti-coronavirus measures instead of strengthening current social distancing guidelines to fight the pandemic.
He made the pledge Friday while chairing his first interagency COVID-19 meeting.
The prime minister asked the public to continue to follow distancing rules and get vaccinated as soon as they can.
President Moon Jae-in approved Kim's appointment earlier in the day after the National Assembly passed his confirmation report last night.
He succeeds Chung Sye-kyun, who stepped down on April 18 to prepare to run in the next presidential race.
Kim told reporters at the government complex in Seoul that he will work toward pursuing national unity in the face of the COVID-19 crisis.
He said the country will be able to overcome challenges "only if we work together."
