Defense Minister Suh Wook says the government will boost South Korea's space defense capabilities as more countries around the world are viewing the domain as increasingly important in facing future security challenges.
Suh said in a video message to a forum in Seoul on Monday that a system will be established for joint operations to deal with growing space threats following the recent lifting of U.S. restrictions on South Korea's missile development.
The minister also vowed efforts to closely work with the private sector to upgrade the local space industry in general.
This comes after President Moon Jae-in announced last month, following his summit with President Joe Biden, that the United States decided to lift all restrictions on South Korea's ability to develop ballistic missiles.
