South Korean authorities have reported 1,202 new coronavirus cases with five more people succumbing to the virus in the last 24 hours.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said Tuesday it confirmed 1,152 local infections and 50 imported cases, raising the total case count to 201,203.

The number of active cases stood at 177,909, while the death toll reached 2,104.

Officials warn that the fourth wave of the pandemic is far from being under control as they face the busy summer travel season and a rise in cases of the virulent Delta variant of COVID-19.

In a bid to slow the spread of infections, South Korea is enforcing the highest Level 4 social distancing rules in the greater Seoul area, restricting private gatherings and business operations, while most other areas are under Level 3 distancing.

The current antivirus curbs are set to run through Sunday, but the central and local governments have signaled that tougher measures could be imposed if the number of daily new coronavirus cases continue to rise.
