South Korea's spy agency has said the recent restoration of inter-Korean communication lines came at the request of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
National Intelligence Service chief Park Jie-won made the revelation Tuesday during a parliamentary intelligence committee meeting.
He also said officials from the two sides have talked via the communication channels twice a day since they reopened last week.
Direct cross-border communication resumed 13 months after the regime unilaterally severed them in protest of anti-Pyongyang propaganda activities in South Korea.
Cheong Wa Dae said the resumption was a result of an agreement reached between President Moon Jae-in and leader Kim, who also exchanged personal letters on multiple occasions since April.
In regards to speculation over a possible summit between Moon and Kim, the spy chief told lawmakers that no such proposal has been made by Seoul.
