The government has warned that the daily coronavirus case count could skyrocket in the days to come after the country reported a record high of 2,434 new infections Friday.
Lee Ki-il from the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters told reporters during a briefing this morning that the sudden surge in cases is attributed to people traveling during the Chuseok holiday, people coming into contact with others and easing of quarantine measures.
He said transmissions will likely increase for the time being.
Lee noted that the situation in the capital region remains serious while warning of a rise in cases in areas outside the greater Seoul area after the holiday.
He issued an urgent plea for people to cooperate with antivirus curbs and other rules such as wearing masks.
The health ministry official then said authorities are discussing with experts from diverse fields a new strategy that involves learning to live with the virus.
