President Moon Jae-in ordered officials on Monday to swiftly come up with a plan to provide COVID-19 booster shots for people who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Moon made the request after a study was released by the U.S. FDA that showed coronavirus protection from the J&J shot weakens after a certain period of time.
More than 1.4 million people in South Korea, including military reservists and civil defense personnel, got J&J's single-dose Janssen vaccine from June.
The drugmaker recommended an extra dose six months after the first shot.
Moon also called on government agencies to make thorough preparations for the country's shift to new pandemic policies that will allow a return to regular life.
The president added that plans should include establishing a system of home treatment for coronavirus patients with mild symptoms.
